a night with the fellows + other

currently, i'm filling in on bass for a friend's band. they're called the fellows - http://www.myspace.com/thefellowsmusic - and this past sunday was the first time i met them for practice. we're preparing for their upcoming shows - friday and saturday. the music is fulfilling and i find it amazing i'll be able to play it.

around 6:30 pm, chipotle called out and three (of five) of us came running (or driving). on our way, the title of this blog came to me. i was riding shotgun as matt, the fellows' drummer, drove and daniel, the fellows' multi-instrumentalist rode behind me.

matt said something like: "gosh, isn't this an amazing time of year? it's still light out at this time."
and i replied with exactly this: "the night is like a jail," and matt agreed, proposing he had never heard it put that way, but he definately agreed.

i sat there wondering who had put those words on my tongue and sent them flying into the 70 degree air of that sunday night. i understood the phrase; to me, the night is like a jail because you're handcuffed in a way. you can't do everything you can do while it's completely light outside. then again, there are some things you can't do while it's sunny out.

for one, i can't walk around with my ipod on and think of what my afterlife will look like. i'd love to be recieved by heaven, yet, i've made a few mistakes that are more than most people's mistakes. i'm through those rough times, but they still haunt me; which is how i could see my afterlife becoming. so when there's time, i take my music and wander through the night, allowing cool air to caress my face while the moon lights everything from above. there's just something special about the night - then again, you can't play FROLF (frizbee golf) when it's dark, which is something i do with my buddies often.

back to driving. i hate that everything is so far away that we have to drive so much. gas is thinning my wallet. i'm selling my truck soon because i'll possibly be commuting up to LA during the week, which is a long ways from the OC. sometimes i wish i lived in that pleasantville and sandlot era, when every necessity seemed to be much nearer and without cluster.

and then after all this, i'm still thinking about my brother. i'm thinking that there's nothing wrong with my life compared to his. i know that tomorrow, i won't hear gunshots nonstop. i know i won't have to wake up for a mission and worry about my life being taken from me. i can wear whatever clothes i want, instead of wearing bdu's every day. and yet, parts of our nation can't bear to support our troops. and the news can't report it correctly. cnn calls itself the best, most trusted name in news. my brother and his buddies in the army call it currently negative news.

this is frustration pouring out. i need a job but no one wants a creative writing major. at least everyone's alive. the people i know, the music i listen to, and the hope i have for my future keeps me alive.
